As we have come quite late to travelling we have the joy of not travelling with children. This affords us the, some would say luxury but I would say essential, opportunity to book an airport lounge.
You might say why spend at least £20 per person before you've even left the country? I would say that a good holiday starts at the airport. The chances are that you've had a stressful and sometimes long journey to get to the airport. London airports are often a lot cheaper for us to fly from but on a good day that's a 3 hour car journey (probably 4-5 hours). You should be at the airport 2 hours before you departure but more often that not get there before that. So after that long cramped car journey you then have at leats 2 hours hanging around a departure lounge with expensive food and drinks and excited children (and some adults) running around and screaming. Then there's prospect of being crammed onto a metal tube with those same children (and adults) for god knows how many hours.
An airport lounge offers a calm oasis in the middle of all that. You have room to relax in a comfortable seat with a drink in your hand and at the very least a bacon roll. You can read the paper or your phone because you have wifi that works and doesn't require you to give any information. There are charging points for your devices so you can make sure they are charged for the flight. And best of all most don't allow children (but check before you book). Aspire Lounges even have a reward program.
I always think the holiday has started when I walk through lounge door, take a deep breath, relax in comfort and prepare myself for the flight. Totally worth £20.
We don't bother on the flight home... No amount of lounging will make the fact the holidays over any better.
