Day Four: Pain, Penis and Pocket Square
The day started with breakfast in our cabin sat on the balcony as the sun came up. It was one of the freebies we got with the cabin upgrade. It’s a lovely, if lazy, way to start the day. I’d also placed an announcement in the cruise daily news letter for Lyn’s birthday and our anniversary. I thought this was going to be free but it cost £4 for about 10 words. I didn’t want to look cheap (even though I am) in front of the receptionist so continued anyway, but I missed a word out. Still a good effort on my part.
There weren’t any dramas this time getting off the ship and we arrived in old town Ibiza, probably about 30 years too late but here nevertheless. We decided to climb up to the castle while the day was still cool. We didn’t bother to see if there was an inside to it, I’ve been inside enough castles to know they’re basically all the same. All the action is on the outside. Also I started getting chest pains once we got to the top. I was fairly sure it was just indigestion and the pain down my left arm and the taste of copper was unrelated. A glass of coke and a large belch in a cafe about halfway down seemed to sort it out.
Back in the town itself Lyn found a street full of tat shops. At one point she called my name whilst I was waiting outside. She was standing next to a load of wooden penis bottle openers. I thought to myself ‘If it can make tea I’m stuffed!’ It can’t, but in any case she’d just found a T-shirt she liked.
We did a bit more shopping and ended up having lunch in a posh looking hotel. We were sat outside in the shade with a gentle cool breeze. Europeans always seem to get alfresco dining right and we always seem to mess it up in the UK no matter what the weather is doing. Lyn recons it’s because there is little or no eating space inside so they have perfected it. She may well be right.
Ibiza Town was a lot more manageable to walk around than Valencia. I would have been annoyed if we had booked a tour for this. So a big city needs a tour. We learn something new every time we go on holiday so we’ll just have to keep going on them until we can’t learn anything else. Lyn bought a bag I got a hat and with our shopping done we headed back to the boat.
For dinner we decided to splash out and eat in the Dining Club. I was going to wear my tux again but it was quite warm and as I was paying for this meal I wanted to enjoy it and not melt. I did put a pocket square, that my daughter had bought me for Christmas, in my jacket pocket.
We started off with an amuse-bouch something we’ve never had before and several courses later ended with coffee. This was the most gastronomic meal we’ve ever had and it was very nice. We did miss Wilfredo though.
