Spanish Cruise October 2021

Day Five: Tat, Tat and Tat.

My naming convention has gone to pot today. It’s not as if it’s difficult to come up with 3 words that start with the same letter so to distract you here’s an interesting fact. I mentioned before that there seemed a lot less people on board. I asked at reception last night and it turns out there are only 580 guests! This is out of a potential 1800. It does make for a far more pleasant atmosphere and you’re never fighting for a seat or someone’s attention.

Dawn in Cartagena.

Today we were in Cartagena. We had booked a tour for this so had to get down to the dock fairly early. As we waited it looked like a crew member was being ‘escorted’ off with their suitcases. There may be a perfectly reasonable explanation…Eventually we were told that the trolley train had broken down and the trip would be cancelled and refunded. We were ‘parked’ right in front of the town so decided to just walk in.

Main Shopping Street.

Again this is a very pretty town. The buildings look very impressive, far more so than a town this size would seem to warrant. They also seem to keep the facade of the buildings while building new structures behind which is a far better system than the listed building nonsense we have. I decided the first impressive building we saw was probably just a bakery but I took a picture anyway.

Looks like a bakery to me.

We sat down at a cafe and then consulted the map. Like most Spanish towns it has a rich Roman history. We decided to go to the very posh sounding Parque Cornisa Treato Romano which is basically a Roman theatre. It did look amazing and offered some good views of the town.

Treato Romano

There were some peacocks and a lot of peahens. Lyn was slightly disappointed in the appearance of them but as I pointed out it’s because the ladies don’t have to make an effort as proven by pretty much every species on the planet.

We found a tat shop but Lyn said it was a proper tat shop with disdain in her voice. I asked what the difference was and was told ‘There’s tat, tat, tat and then tat’ each one given a slightly different inflection but I’m still none the wiser. The fact this one had some suspicious figurines in the window which had to have an explanation note might make a difference.

We decided to save some money and have lunch on board as it was already paid for. As we were being seated Anupam who is the Robin to Wilfredo’s Batman, saw us and started beckoning us over to their section. The lady who’s section we had just scorned seemed quite offended. It did run through my head that I should make them ‘fight for my love’ the way I tried (and failed) to make the children do. They always said they would only fight to see which one ended up with ‘mummy’ which is fair enough.

By the time we got back to the cabin the staff had made a lovely cake out of the towels surrounded by Lyn’s cards. They’d also added a bit of glitter and extra chocolates. We had to report for an extra covid test in the afternoon so we could enter Gibraltar the next day.

I was going to have a rant about how 70 out of the aforementioned 580 passengers failed to do their 10 second automated mandatory temperature check today before the 4pm deadline and how it’s little wonder the UK is one of the worst countries in the world for COVID. (I went on in this vain for some time)

Instead I’m going to rant about the fact Lyn made me sit through a Musicals ‘showcase’ that didn’t feature a song from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. To give you an idea of what it was like it did feature a song from ‘The Producers’ and it wasn’t even Spring Time for Hitler.

Apparently this is the amount of drink you need for a 45 minute show!
